Other class feedback

Genre:
You succeeded in making the video nice and mysterious.
The abstract shot of suit guy walking in field is almost creepy.

Relationships:
Relationships created between music and visuals are good. and the editing pace.
music more mellow and slightly dark matches the feel to performance shots.
Lyrics 'take me away to another place' matches the setting of a warehouse. It shows isolation.

Camera work:
Good cutaway shots, the close ups of instruments worked well. Wide veriety of angles and shots used. Effective shots of lead singer. Good shots of drummer.
Shadows are good.

Editing:
The quality and pace were good. Slow at the beginning stayed with the music. Doesnt look tacky with transitions. just fades looks effective and pro. works well. Shots on top of other shots look good. Black flashes were not faded looks not good as ruins flow.

Mise-en-scene: variety of locations, clothes which help to keep the video interesting. good guitar. most of it dark. mike at end too long. good props, instruments.
Special effects:nice use of wide screen love lights on guitar. filters good.

THIS IS EXAMPLE OF FOOTAGE OF SHADOWS SHOWN ON THE WALLS. WHICH WE HAVE IN OUR MUSIC VIDEO. TAKEN FROM THE KILLERS, MR BIGHT SIDE.

And again.....

And again.....

Again anorther similar shot to which we used. This shows that we got the genre rigth for our music video and used many shots similar to the genre. Bloc Party, Banquet.

This is a similar shot to what we used and the lighting is dark which is also similar to our music video. This is bloc party, Banquet.

professional video comparison

In "Resume Ignore" by exit ten, the band are shown performing and there are many similarities between our video and theirs. Examples of this are the close ups of the vocalists face to establish a character, however in this video, the audience can see the main characters face unlike in our video.

The band also include shots that we planned to use but couldn't because of a technical fault. This is essentially a wide shot that establishes the entire band.
Some of the fades in our video are reminiscent of the fades in Exit tens video also

Final Lesson

In the final lesson...we had a problem with the sound..so this meant that we lost a lot of time in the lesson to finish the music video. So we stayed for a while after school so that we could get it finished a standerd that we would be happy with. We decided that the end shot would be off the microphone all alone with a dark setting to show that it is finished and that all the musicians had gone and that it was empty.

Production methods

25% Planning this included storyboards, researching music videos of different genres, anamatic, and producing different ideas. we did this amount because we needed to get our ideas right so that we can move it on to how to film the music video. basically to be sure.

15% Pre production Location scouting, rehersals, test shots. we didnt do many test shots because we didnt have any equipment in long road such as guitars, drums, etc. We didnt do any rehersals because we didnt have a location sorted to do this in at the time. Location scouting, i spent most time doing this asking, around through fiends, and family. and schools. we also searched on the internet.

20% Shooting, filming and actual footage. i did this we spent 8 hours filming that day. as left it late because of location and people. we found that the footage wasnt bad but i did feel that i wanted to go back if i could of to do more movements and different shots. as we did have bad equipment on our day.

30% Editing cutting clips arranging them into narrative and motifs. spent alot of time as we wanted to make a successful music video. we edited it as much as we can but did run out of time.

10% post production Transitions, effects. we used filters but found we ran out of time to have a finished music video to play around further.

Final Music Video

feedback of FINAL

We got some feedback from the class and from friends that have watched our music video and these are some of the comments that we got:

Positives:

  • The settings were good and the contrasts between the locations (sunny outside and dark warehouse) is effective.
  • The guitar shots worked well and the energy of the guitare movement went really well with the genre if the song and made the video more interesting and energetic.
  • The lip-syncing was done well.
  • The shadows of the drummer was effective and looked good.
  • The lighting in the warhouse worked well dark and low lit as it added to the stlye of the video.
  • We had a large variety of shots.
  • We also had strong images.
  • We had generally good shots..some that were mentioned were the end shot which is out of focus and the shot with the lights shining from the guitare.
  • The shots that have Ollie walking towards the camera were good and that we had a good veriety of those shots.
  • The fact that the video shows the purpose for Ollie running because at the end the video shows where he was running too, this was really good and made a lot of sence to the audience.
  • The props worked well and were well thought out.
  • Not seeing Ollie singing clearly all the time worked well because it gave the video a sence of mystery and gave it more stlye.
  • The frame was good, it was cropped well so that the right amounts are in the frame.
  • The slight colour change in the begining shots and the end shots looked good.
Negative/ improvements

  • Some people would have prefered seeing more of the snging clearer but some people liked it how it was.
  • There could have been more of a veriaty of the shots used of the singer.
  • Maybe use different colours/ filters
  • end shot too long
  • use of one shot used too much

Final Days

were now in the final days of editing our music video so i have been filling in my frees with extra editing time and stayed after college one evening. there is one day left i hope we finish it if we do it still doesnt give us theat time to do extra adjustments as i can imagine been slightly rushed. we have one lesson. and there is still a few gaps to fill but i am pleased with it as it could be worse. it has a variety of shots in it etc what i wanted but it could be better if we had more time. such as more shots needed more band members and i would of liked to use some ideas i have been influenced by from the killers video shown below and used the space more. but overall it hasnt been a bad music video for the first time of making one. i just hope we finish. Polly.

The Killers

This is a video i watched during half term and we didnt no it existed other wise we have used to influence our ideas as this does have similarities to our footage. and may try use some of the effects in this video in ours. well c. weve only got a week left to edit and half way through we hope we finish.

ROUGH CUT

We tried putting it on but some how wouldnt work. it was a short rough cut anyway as didnt have much time after uploading footage to edit, but the intro was done with the diegetic sounds setting up turning amp on putting mic on stand, picking mic up etc, cranked down with a slight filter on them.

Filming

On weds we went to the location in bourn and filmed for 5 hours of our time to get as much footage as possible we ended up using all of the tape up. Me (polly) and ollie filmed for 5 hours and ollie bought all of the costumes and band equipment we did have a slight problem with a guitarest short but we worked around this. Also the battery went and had to keep connected to the plug so couldnt have as much freeness and movement with the camera and couldlnt do wide shots.I had to film all as ollie performed, overall we worked around the problems and got on with it. the lighting was good as and created shadows.

Location

Polly has found a location which we are going to use...we are going to use a metal farm storage warehouse, which is in Cambridgeshire, Bourn it is her friends farm but the warehouse was empty and when me and ollie went to film in it it was pretty much empty with high celins metal walls and concrete floor with good lighting and electrics it was exactly what we were looking for this was a success.

storyboard animatic

This is our storybourd

These are some of our test shots...we filmed these to see what they would look like and we played around with the filters...this is what we would like it to look like.

Lighting

In our music video we want to keep the lighting dark but will ad slight filters on to the footage to make this effect but we are going to use a lamp which we make the lighting dark.

Shots we are USING!

The shots we want to use which i have planned out are;
The running shots which i will use the camera clamp and attach it to a trolley and film in front of the runner and behind we will decide on this when we try and test it out.
Weve done test shots of the chorus scene which is of the side of the face using the rule of thirds. showing only the nose and mouth.
i have researched some shots for the guitar and want to use low to high shots using the strings of the guitar to show leading lines. and also high to low shots.
we want wide angled shots of the band which will be low floor shots looking up at the band members and high shots so we will need a ladder.we are going to try and experiment with movement shots because atm we dont no what were looking for. but i have planned some but need to test them. from low to high again with smooth movements. we now what were looking for.
another is a side shot of the face and microphone and also front view with movement from the singer.
I also want to do a shot of the guitar player shoulder with the guitar and this will take half of the shot but the other players will be shot also in the background. we will experiment with the drum shots.
the lighting will be dark so the performers will be mainly lit.
Pol

This is a good example of the angles we want of the guitars which we will create...especially if we have a dark background from the lighting we set up during filming..

Comberton Village College

I (polly) have got in contact with comberton village college to see if we can use one of their drama rooms to film in as i used to attend the school and know that they have good new facilities in use. They contacted me back and said we could use it if we like and to get back to them this was are back up plan if the other didnt fall through. The room would be black this is why i wanted to use it.
this is the website for the college

Looking for a location

For the video, we have decided on a quite an open space that is inside i.e metal barn, aircraft hangar for the band to perform in. Either one of these would be ideal, however, these places are very hard to find and its even harder to persuade the owner to allow us to shoot our video there. We may have a location that we could use to shoot the performance although the space might not be an open as we had hoped.

Review of last years music video

I like this video because the effects worked really well. The acting was to a decent standed and the colours worked well together. I liked how they used the lyrics 'am i just dreaming' in the video by using a foggy sort of effect so that it looks dreamlike.

Headphone idea

In the video we are having a person running in a hurry to the song 'take me away' and at the beggining we may have him putting in the headphones as if to listen to the song...then it will play. This coud be a possible shot.

Marianne

CLOSE UP SHOTS

These photographs are like the types of close up shots we want to achieve. Black and white looks good.

This is one of last years music videos called 'funky y2c' This is the one we chose to post as we quite like the way it has been made, with a choreographed dance and rap which has been put in place of this video. With funky bright colours used in an urban setting. We also like the small narrative at the beginning. It matches the song well and is an enjoyable video to watch. We also like the special effects used on the colouring and the camera is steady and some good variety of shots used.

The drum shot in this clip is a simliar shot we might decide to include. A under shot of the drums.

Polly

Lyrics

With every single step you take
The longer you will have to wait
The sigh in a silent room is a big mistake
And now I forget my name
I left it back in yesterday
I'll never see, never know what's coming round my way
What's coming round my way?

The thieves and the rebels
They know it all, they know it
Where you go I follow
Take me away to another place
Each day comes, it passes
And I walk by with my head held high
Where you go I follow
Take me away to another place, ugh!

And now I forget my name
I left it back in yesterday
I'll never see, never know what's coming round my way
What's coming round my way?

The thieves and the rebels
They know it all, they know it
Where you go I follow
Take Me Away Lyrics on http://www.lyricsmania.com
Take me away to another place
Each day comes, it passes
And I walk by with my head held high
Where you go I follow
Take me away to another place

And now I forget my name
I left it back in yesterday
And when you breathe that loudest sigh
In a silent room, it's a big mistake

The thieves and the rebels
They know it all, they know it
Where you go I follow
Take me away to another place
Each day comes, it passes
And I walk by with my head held high
Where you go I follow
Take me away to another place

Just take me away...

Pitch for new song

"a mysterious take on a frenzied life"
'Our pitch is for 'Take me away' by the subways. This is a indie/ rock genre of song. For this song we have decided to make the music video by using a variety of different shots to make it have interesting shots such as low angle shots high shots, wide shots, using small depth of fields and large depth of fields. side shots, behind shots, we also want to try and use different effects we haven't tried before which is to attach the camera to the guitar so the audience can feel the movement of it. We are going to also crank the footage up and down at certain points of the song. our influences for the camera movements and angles are from 'Despised Icon' the arms of perdition.
The lighting of this video will be low lighting, only lit up with some studio lights. we want it so the band members faces wont be shown clearly who they actually are the movements from the cameras and the lighting.

the narrative in this video wont be much of a narrative but we will be filming a parts of the main singer running to 'take me away' (which is the main chorus, point of this song), he just keeps running till the song ends, trying to beat the song.

Props,
Microphone
guitars,
drum kits,
amps,
car,
lights,

The outfitting will be different for the main singer and the rest of the band, the main singer will be wearing a white shirt, black trousers, shoes, and the rest of the band will be wearing usual casual clothes to match genre.

Location, will be a hall, warehouse. And we will also use a long street road in cambridge to film the narrative.
We will film a small location but when film inside it will look big.

We will have the band footage in black and white or some colour change and the narrative will be colour.

Camera shots examples

this video displays great use of different camera shots and angles. incorporating this into the performance in our video is what we would like to do.
